What is Ice Away?

Localized winter protection when the dock needs to stay in

Ice Away is a 1/2 HP submersible pond and lake deicer for docks, pilings, boats, marina slips, and other localized areas at risk of freeze damage. It is a practical option when removing a dock or lifting equipment out of the water for winter is not realistic.

The unit moves 500 gallons of water per minute from below the surface and directs it upward and outward. This circulation helps limit ice formation around the installation and reduce the risk of pressure and shifting ice damaging nearby structures.

The size and shape of the affected area will vary with installation depth, water depth, weather, and site conditions. Ice Away is intended for localized ice management, not whole lake ice removal.

Why choose Ice Away?
  • Practical dock protection: Helps manage ice around docks and equipment that must remain in the water.
  • 500 GPM circulation: Both the 115V and 230V configurations move the same amount of water.
  • Suspended underwater operation: The sealed motor, propeller, and diffuser operate below the surface near the area being protected.
  • Water cooled motor: The submerged motor uses the surrounding water for cooling.
  • No motor oil: There is no motor oil to check, change, or leak into the water.
  • Stainless steel construction: The 4 inch submersible motor is designed for underwater operation.
  • No long exposed shaft: The compact submerged design avoids the long shaft arrangement used by some circulation systems.
  • Three year warranty: Backed by Outdoor Water Solutions support.
How does it work?

It brings deeper water to the surface and keeps it moving

During cold weather, water below the surface is often warmer than the water directly exposed to freezing air. Ice Away uses a high speed propeller to draw that deeper water upward. A flow directing cone diffuser then spreads the moving water outward near the surface.

The continued movement helps delay and limit ice formation in the immediate area. This can reduce damaging ice pressure around docks, pilings, boat lifts, and other structures left in the water.

Ice conditions remain unpredictable. Performance depends on the installation and weather, and thin ice may extend beyond the visibly open water.

Should I choose 115V or 230V?

Choose the voltage that matches the electrical service at your site

The two configurations provide the same 500 GPM flow. The 230V configuration is not a higher flow model. Its main electrical difference is a lower amp draw.

Configuration Flow Full load amps Full load watts
115V 500 GPM 8.1 amps 890 watts
230V 500 GPM 4.3 amps 845 watts

Choose 115V when compatible 115V service is available at the installation. Choose 230V when the site is equipped for 230V service and the lower amp draw fits the electrical plan. If you are unsure, have a qualified electrician confirm the available service, circuit requirements, and required ground fault protection before ordering.

Where should Ice Away be used?

Best suited for

  • Docks and pilings that remain in the water through winter
  • Boat lifts, marina slips, and moored equipment
  • Localized areas where freezing water may place pressure on structures
  • Ponds, lakes, and marinas in climates with seasonal or unexpected freezing

Not designed for

  • Removing ice from an entire pond or lake
  • Creating a large recreational open water area
  • Extreme or prolonged freezing without a site specific plan
  • Areas intended for skating, ice fishing, walking, or vehicle travel on the ice
What maintenance and safety should I consider?

The sealed motor requires no motor oil checks or oil changes. The installation should still be inspected periodically for debris, damage, and secure suspension. Disconnect power before inspecting or handling the unit and follow the installation instructions supplied with the product.

Moving water can create thin and unstable ice beyond the visibly open area. Keep people, pets, and vehicles away from the operating area, clearly mark the hazard, and follow applicable local requirements.

Protection for Docks That Stay in the Water

Pulling a dock before winter is not always practical. It may be too heavy, fixed in place, or difficult to reach once the water turns cold. Ice Away is made for situations where a dock, piling, boat slip, or other waterfront structure will remain in the water through freezing weather.

The unit circulates water around a targeted area to help limit ice formation and reduce the risk of pressure against nearby structures. It is not intended to keep an entire pond or lake open. Placement, water depth, weather, and the length and severity of the freeze all affect performance.

When the Dock Has to Stay in the Water

Removing a dock can mean cold water, heavy lifting, extra equipment, or hiring a crew. When the structure has to remain in place, its left to brave the harsh damage that ice brings. The expanding ice acts like a giant nutcracker that can crush, snap, and bend docks and boats. While Ice Away offers a way to keep water moving around the area you are trying to protect.

How it works:

The unit is suspended near the dock, piling, boat slip, or moored equipment. Its propeller moves water upward while the diffuser directs the flow outward through a localized area. That circulation helps limit ice formation around nearby structures.

Results depend on placement, water depth, wind, current, air temperature, duration of freezing, and available heat in the water. Large structures and long periods of severe cold may require a site review or more than one unit.

What Does This Mean?

If lifting or storing the dock is not realistic, the goal is to protect the area around it instead. The expanding ice acts like a giant nutcracker that can crush boat hulls, snap heavy dock posts, and bend metal frames.

Ice Away
keeps water moving where the structure is most vulnerable in order to help keep the ice away from causing any damage.

Suspend It Where It's Needed

Before installation, identify the structure you need to protect, the water depth near it, and the electrical service available at the site. The unit must be securely suspended and positioned so the circulating water reaches the vulnerable area.

How it works:

Operating depth and direction affect where the water travels. Weather, wind, current, water depth, and the length of the freeze can change the size and shape of the open water area. One setup cannot produce the same coverage at every pond, dock, or marina.

For a large dock, several slips, shallow water, or severe conditions, ask an OWS Pond Expert to review the site before ordering. Have a qualified electrician confirm the circuit and required ground fault protection.

What Does This Mean?

Its as simple as setting it and forgetting it. It can run all winter long with no maintenance since its a sealed motor and is water-cooled! And before you order, find these 3 things: the water depth near the structure, the voltage available at the site, and the distance to the power source. Those answers will help determine which setup fits your property and help an OWS rep with any questions.

If lifting the unit or working beside cold water is difficult, arrange help for installation instead of treating it as a one person job.

No Oil to Maintain Means a Healthier Environment

Ice Away uses a sealed stainless submersible motor with no oil to check, change, or leak into the water. Removing any routine motor maintenance task and avoids any concern around fish and aquatic life.

How it works:

Both configurations use a 1/2 HP, 0.37 kW, 4 inch stainless steel submersible motor rated for 60 Hz and 3,450 RPM. Both move 500 gallons of water per minute.

The 115V configuration draws 8.1 full load amps and 890 full load watts. The 230V configuration draws 4.3 full load amps and 845 full load watts.

Choose the voltage that matches the electrical service available at the installation site. The 230V configuration draws fewer amps, but it does not move more water. Have a qualified electrician confirm the circuit and required ground fault protection before installation.

What Does This Mean?

The motor is cooled by water and does not depend on motor oil. There is no oil level to monitor and no motor oil inside the unit that can leak into the pond.

Both voltage choices move the same 500 GPM. Choose 115V when the installation has compatible 115V service. Choose 230V when the site is equipped for 230V service and the lower amp draw fits the electrical plan. The 230V option is not a higher flow model.

If you do not know which electrical service is available near your pond or dock, ask a qualified electrician or an OWS Pond Expert before ordering.
