What Causes Algae Growth?
Algae growth is often a result of imbalances in your pond’s ecosystem. Common factors that lead to algae blooms include:- Excess nutrients: Algae thrive on nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. This can accumulate from runoff, fish waste, decaying organic matter, and fertilizers.
- Warm water: Algae grows more quickly in warm water. Particularly during the summer months when sunlight is abundant.
- Stagnant water: Lack of water movement promotes the growth of algae. As stagnant water allows nutrients to collect and algae to multiply.
- Lack of competition: When there aren’t enough aquatic plants or beneficial organisms to compete for nutrients, algae can quickly take over.
