The Difference Between a Weighted and Non-Weighted Airline

  • July 28, 2021

Which Type of Airline do You Need?

Whether you purchase an aeration kit that comes with airlines or need to replace an airline, it is essential to know that there are two types, which are weighted and non-weighted. The difference between the two is in the name itself. However, does this difference really matter when you’re investing in an airline for your pond? The short answer is yes. In this article, we’ll go over some of the ins and outs that you need to know to install your pond airline successfully.

What is the Purpose of the Airline?

The first thing to know about an airline is its purpose. The main goal of the airline is to provide airflow between the aerator and air diffusers. This is how you get the aeration effect for your pond. Moreover, the thicker the line, the more airflow you’ll be able to get to your aerator, which will maximize its air output. Airlines are made of a rubber material that is durable and can withstand weather elements. However, these lines can be damaged in other instances, which you should take into consideration.

The Weighted Airline

Weighted airlines are best suited to go into the water and deep in the pond. Because of this reason, these lines are weighted and will sink to the bottom. You will be able to use this type of airline for all types of aerating systems. You can choose between 50, 100, 500 feet in length. One of the advantages of a weighted airline is that it won’t get tangled with fishing lines, boat motors, and other pond products.

The Non-Weighted Airline

When it comes to the non-weighted airline, it is best to  burying it underground. It is a good idea to bury this type of line about 4 to 6 inches deep. This is to prevent damages that can be done to the line with mowing the lawn or anything else that can cause a rupture or tear in the line. You can even go a step further in protecting your airline by covering it with PVC pipes or extra rubber piping around it. In contrast to the weighted airline, the non-weighted line is not ideal to go in ponds. If you were to try this, the airline would just float to the top. The airline would also work for running a line down a windmill tower.
